Wake Co. Nonprofit Raises Over $55,000 to Support Abused and Neglected Children

Updated: May 3, 2019

Funds Raised Include $20,000 Matching Grant from 4 Others Foundation

More Than 200 Guests Join Friends of Wake Guardian Ad Litem at Inaugural “Light the Way” Gala

RALEIGH, NC – November 26, 2018 – The Friends of Wake Guardian Ad Litem (The Friends) is a local, all volunteer run non-profit dedicated to supporting the approximately 700 children in foster or kinship care here in the Triangle region. To drive awareness, raise funds and create lasting connections in our community, The Friends hosted the inaugural “Light the Way” gala hosted by Raleigh Divorce Law Firm on November 15.

“We are thrilled with the results of the first “Light the Way” gala and thank the many members of our community who came out to support the children we represent,” said board member and fundraising chair, Carrie Haub. “The funds raised will provide local children in care with school supplies, educational supports and activities like summer camp. Providing these activities helps us realize our vision to see every child set up for success in school and in life.”

The Friends received a matching grant of $20,000 from the 4 Others Foundation, which was announced by Board Chair Helen Krauss at the event. “The announcement of this matching grant, which will provide much need 1:1 tutoring by the Triangle Literacy Council, really energized gala guests,” said Krauss. “Research indicates only 2% of foster children will go on to achieve a 4-year college degree. Tutoring provides these children with an educational foundation to set them on a path to success.”

Gala guests enjoyed an evening of inspiration and fun, including a silent auction, photo booth, wine pull and more. Speakers included State Senator Tamara Barringer and Judge Lori Christian.

“We’re thrilled to have been the premier sponsor of the Light the Way gala and support the critical work of The Friends,” said Heather W. Forshey of Raleigh Divorce Law Firm. “We understand the impact of family and community on the lives of children and want to use our voice to advocate for the children in our county that need it most.”
